Black Elected Legislative Women. DoubleTree Lloyd Center Hotel &
Executive Meeting Center, Portland, Oregon. Topics for workshops,
panels, and presentations include; Health (Wellness, Diabetes, Obesity &
Fitness, Heart & Stroke, and Women's Cancers), Education Opportunity,
Emergency Preparedness, Transportation, Energy and Economic Development.
NOBEL/ Women is a 501(c)(3) organization founded to address issues
affecting the lives of all women and to advance their social, economic
and political quality of life. Cost: $250 (must be received by May 25).

(NOBEL/Women)


THE ORGANIZATION


 

The National Organization of Black Elected Legislative Women
NOBEL/Women) is a non-profit organization composed of current and former
Black women legislators.  Originally established in 1985 as a national
organization to increase and promote the presence of Black women in
government, NOBEL/Women in recent years has expanded its vision to serve
as a global voice to address a myriad of issues affecting the lives of
all women.  Throughout its history, NOBEL/Women has inspired women to
take an active role in the making of public policy and has served as a
catalyst for economic and social justice for all classes and races of
people.  With dedicated leaders and a strong vision, NOBEL/Women has
been a strategic force in advancing the quality of life socially,
economically and politically for all women.

 

As a viable voice, NOBEL/Women acts to communicate the needs of women to
the media, legislature and private sector to affect positive change.
NOBEL/Women provides valuable resource information and serves as liaison
to governmental entities.  NOBEL/Women provides oversight and holds
governmental agencies and private companies accountable for compliance
with programs, policies, laws and regulations that prohibit
discrimination against women.  By providing forums for education and
training, leadership and policy-making, and through collaborations with
other organizations, NOBEL/Women actively works to:

 

-  Increase the representation of Black women in local, state and
federal elected offices.

-  Increase the number of Black women in appointed positions.

-  Increase the representation of Black women on Boards and Commissions
at the state,

    local and national level, in both the public and private sector.


EDUCATION & TRAINING


 

NOBEL/Women conducts a variety of forums designed to inform and prepare
women to run for an elected office, serve on corporate/private sector
boards, and participate in advocacy activities.  In 2001, NOBEL/Women
developed a partnership with the Center for American Women and Politics
(CAWP), a unit of the Eagleton Institute of Politics, Rutgers, The State
University of New Jersey to establish the NOBEL/Women and CAWP
Leadership Institute.  This year-long program will be the first of its
kind in the country to proactively seek and provide campaign, public
policy and leadership training to prepare Black women to advance their
leadership roles.

 

LEGISLATION & POLICY

 

Nobel/women authors legislation on critical issues facing women,
children and families.  Through its membership, NOBEL/Women assists
policymakers with research, analysis and advocacy efforts.


COLLABORATION


 

NOBEL/Women shares a unique relationship with the National Black Caucus
of State Legislatures (NBCSL), an organization that boasts
representation of Minority State Elected Officials inclusive of all
fifty states, the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.  In addition to
hosting the annual NOBEL/Women Symposium during the annual meeting of
NBCSL, NOBEL/Women and NBCSL collaborates on developing position
statements and share legislative initiatives on issues of priority to
women.  NOBEL/Women also collaborates on initiatives with its' corporate
sponsors to bring greater awareness and visibility to issues of special
importance to all women.


NOBEL/WOMEN PRIORITIES


 

Recognizing the power of the legislative process, NOBEL/Women pursues an
aggressive legislative agenda at the local, state and federal level.
Representative of over 200 members, NOBEL/Women members actively seek to
promote solutions through legislative, public policy and program
development initiatives.  NOBEL/Women is active in drafting legislation
and providing testimony, advocacy, education and training. It serves as
a strong voice to raise awareness and visibility for critical issues
facing women today.  The following items represent some of NOBEL/Women's
top priorities:


Employment/Entrepreneur


-  Support job development, workforce programs and training.

-  Access opportunities to financing and micro-enterprise loans to
support business

    ownership.

-  Support initiatives to even the playing field for equity in salaries
for women.  


Education/Healthcare


-  Support passage of protection laws for women and children from abuse
and domestic

    violence.

-  Support healthcare legislative initiatives designed to meet the needs
of low-income

   and at-risk populations.

-  Promote educational initiatives designed to meet the needs of
low-income and at-risk

   populations.


Housing


-  Support legislative initiatives and programs to assist in
homeownership and affordable 

    housing.

-  Work with the banking industry to seek creative options for
credit-worthiness to access

    loans for homeownership.


Human Rights/Justice


-  Enforce and strengthen provisions in the law to prevent and protect
against

   discrimination.


Utilities/Technology


-  Support efforts to close the digital divide.


MEMBERSHIP


 

In working to fulfill its mission, NOBEL/Women draws on the strength of
its diverse membership.  These members include current and former state
legislators local, state and federal elected officials, corporate, civic
and private sector representatives.  Collectively, these members serve
as a catalyst for the creative leadership needed to raise the quality of
dialogue, participation and advocacy on matters of critical importance
to all women.  NOBEL/Women welcomes women from all walks of life, and
men who share their interests to become members.
