Multicultural Learning
Welcome to NAME's Multicultural Learning section. We created this set of resources (including teacher case studies and reflective activities) for teachers and teacher professional developers who want to know why multicultural education makes sense in the classroom, what it means, and what teachers can do. Here, we go beyond definitions of multicultural education, focusing on specifics of student learning and classroom practice.
We conceptualize multicultural learning in the classroom in relationship to the interplay between students and teachers, and among students themselves. This interplay leads us to view multicultural learning in relationship to what teachers can do that impact on student outcomes. As the diagram shows, we focus on four dimensions of the classroom in which those interplays occur: curriculum, assessment of learning, pedagogy, and intellectual challenge. We were specifically interested in interactions between students and teachers, and among students, across and within these four dimensions, with the main question for teachers being: What can I do in my own classroom and school?
